MANILA, Philippines – The Aquinos – and especially this Aquino – is not backing down.
Kris Aquino, daughter of the late former president Cory Aquino and former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr, paid tribute to her parents on Father’s Day, June 17, in a live broadcast over social media.
“Taas noo ko kayang sabihin sa inyo, hindi kami umalis. ‘Di kami duwag. Kung kayo, matapang lang sa social media, eh kami harapan… Nabaril na. Ilang beses binaril, pero nakatayo pa rin at nandito. Namatayan kami, si Noy nabaril, kami ilang beses. Naduwag ba kami? Hindi. So, Happy Father’s Day, Dad. You raised good children because you gave us the courage to be Filipinos,” she said.
(I will say this with so much pride – we never left. We aren’t cowards. If you’re tough only on social media, we face problems head-on… We were shot at. Several times, we were shot at, but we stood bravely and stayed. We lost a loved one, [former president Benigno Aquino III] was shot, this happened several times. Did we cower? No. So, Happy Father’s Day, Dad. You raised good children because you gave us the courage to be Filipinos.) A post shared by KRIS (@krisaquino) on Jun 16, 2018 at 11:24pm PDT
The “Queen of All Media” went live on social media to share with followers a surprise that her two sons, Josh and Bimby, did in collaboration with her own team. The video begins with a slideshow of pictures of Kris with her parents and ends with footage of Josh and Bimby buying Kris a ring.
But later on, she had a quick Q&A with Bimby, where she spoke about her relationship with her parents, as well as with her own children.
“I am who I am because of the sacrifice my dad gave and because of the strength my mother showed,” said Kris. A post shared by KRIS (@krisaquino) on Jun 16, 2018 at 11:27pm PDT
Kris also gave sage advice to single parents who have to be both mom and dad to their kids.
Kris, who herself is a single parent, urged them to fix their relationship if it’s still possible. But if it isn’t, “the best option there is to make the children feel that they don’t have to take sides, that they are loved by both.”
Kris used to be married to basketball player James Yap, Bimby’s father. Their relationship has been a rather strained one as of late, with Kris publicly lashing out against James over his public statements about Bimby and their relationship. She has since chosen to stay quiet about James, even stopping herself and Bimby from expounding on the issues during their live stream.
The actress, former TV talk show host, and prime celebrity endorser has become one of the loudest and most prominent defenders of her parents and their legacy.
Earlier this month, Kris slammed Communications Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson for posting a clip of Ninoy getting a kiss from two women moments before he was killed in 1983. Mocha, an entertainer-turned-public-official, posted the video to defend President Rodrigo Duterte from media uproar after he publicly kissed an overseas Filipino worker during an official event in South Korea.
Duterte’s top aide Bong Go, on behalf of the President, apologized to Kris for the incident. But Mocha did not apologize and insisted she was merely speaking the truth . – Rappler.com
