Real Madrid star Marco Asensio has refused to move out a mega-money move to Liverpool after the World Cup.
As we reported earlier this week, speculation is mounting in Spain that Liverpool and Bernabeu officials have spoken about opening negotiations for the 22-year-old, who wants more starts with the back-to-back-to-back European champions.
Reports in Spain suggest a fee of £158million has been slapped on the youngster, who also has a €700m (£616m) release clause in a contract that runs to 2023.
Asensio is currently at the World Cup in Russia, where Spain play the hosts in a last-16 tie on Sunday after finishing above neighbours and European champions Portugal to top Group B. And asked about Kop interest, Asensio fuelled the possibility of a move to the Premier League by saying: “Liverpool? When the World Cup is over, we’ll talk about that sort of thing, now I’m focused on selection for Spain.
Asensio wanted more game-time under Zinedine Zidane, who left the Spanish giants after Madrid won the Champions League final – ironically against Liverpool – last month.
But there’s now a new boss at the Bernabeu, Asensio is planning talks with Zidane’s successor — his former Spain national-team boss, Julen Lopetegui. Read More Transfer news LIVE: Latest done deals and rumours including Liverpool and more Asensio is mulling over his Real Madrid future (Image: AFP)
“I’m glad Julen has signed up for Real Madrid, after the World Cup we’ll talk things over with him” said Asensio.
Liverpool have so far added Fabinho to their ranks to join Naby Keita, who signed a contract with the Reds last August to move this summer.
The pair will officially become Liverpool players on July 1, but Jurgen Klopp is still in the market for a creative attacking midfielder.
Moses Simon of Gent in Belgium is ear-marked as a potential target in the wide areas, as is Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri. poll loading Will Marco Asensio be an automatic starter for Real Madrid next season? 3000+ VOTES SO FAR
